Chronic Fatigue Q & A

What is chronic fatigue?

Fatigue is an unexplained lack of physical and emotional energy. You may feel excessively tired or as though you’re in a chronic state of weariness. Patients with fatigue typically lack the energy, concentration, or motivation to engage in their normal activities.

You may have symptoms such as:

  • Weakness and pain after being active
  • Memory or concentration problems
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle aches or weakness

Chronic fatigue doesn’t improve with rest, and it may be accompanied by an underlying medical condition such as fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, or lupus.

When do I have chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS)?

You’re diagnosed with CFS, also called myalgic encephalomyelitis, when your fatigue lasts at least six months and you have:

  • An inability to perform normal activities
  • Post-exertional malaise
  • Unrefreshing sleep
  • Cognitive impairment
  • Orthostatic intolerance

Post-exertional malaise refers to symptoms getting worse after physical, mental, or emotional effort. Orthostatic intolerance occurs when you stand up. For example, you may experience lightheadedness, headache, visual problems, or difficulty concentrating upon standing.

CFS may be triggered by a viral infection, immune system problems, hormone imbalances, or severe stress caused by a physical illness or surgery.

How is chronic fatigue treated?

Dr. Singer focuses on determining the true root cause of your fatigue or weakness. He uses comprehensive and broad testing to get to the underlying cause, then develops a customized treatment that targets your problem.

There aren’t any treatments approved to treat CFS, and there isn’t just one treatment you can use to deal with chronic fatigue. For such a complex disease, you’ll get the most effective results from an alternative medicine practitioner like Dr. Singer.

He combines the best traditional and alternative treatments, opening the door to using a conventional treatment such as medication, as well as natural, noninvasive methods to bring your body back into balance and heal your chronic fatigue.

A few examples of therapies provided by the team at HealthFirst include nutritional replenishment, detoxification, and hormone balancing.

Many patients benefit from a therapeutic dose of vitamins and minerals through an IV nutrient infusion. If your blood tests show a hormone imbalance, Dr. Singer prescribes natural bioidentical hormone therapy.

Dr. Singer may also recommend a therapeutic massage or a gentle exercise program to reduce your sensitivity to activity and help you slowly do more without worsening your fatigue.

If you can barely drag yourself through the day due to fatigue, call HealthFirst or schedule an appointment online.
